Abdelghani Laraoui, who leads Focused Research Group 2 with Nebraska’s Emergent Quantum Materials and Technologies (EQUATE) collaboration, has received a named professorship from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln  College of Engineering. His new title is the Leonard A. Lovell Associate Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering.

At UNL, Laraoui leads the Quantum Sensing & Defect Discovery and Spectroscopy Lab. His research focuses on quantum materials based on diamond color centers and defects in semiconductors and two-dimensional materials for quantum sensing and information processing. His work spans quantum sensing, defect discovery and spectroscopy, spintronics, and nanophotonics, enabling next-generation quantum devices and scalable optical and spin-based networks. He has received funding from the National Science Foundation within the ExpandQISE, EPSCOR, and DMR programs.

Laraoui joined the UNL College of Engineering in 2019, after serving on the faculty at the University of New Mexico and City College of New York (CUNY). He also previously worked in private industry as a Consulting Scientist at ODMR Technologies, Inc. He earned his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Louis Pasteur of Strasbourg (France).
